Nancy
Worthington’s art combines hands-on entertainment with social
commentary and educational content – bringing humanity to
technology through art. She
embraces viewer participation – emphasizing that through
physical involvement, intellectual and emotional insights are
invoked. Her work
reflects human conflict with nature and with our technological
civilization. A vital
part of this art is the exposure Worthington gives to the
ambiguities, inconsistencies and polarities of the human
condition; of social and psychological entrapment.
Her images become a catalyst to awaken consciousness and to
facilitate change through awareness for a better, more humane
world.
Nancy’s
activist vision often challenges the social and political status
quo – a risky endeavor for an artist at any time but especially
in the current atmosphere of terrorism, war and global economic
uncertainty. That is
the context in which her recent ‘George Dubya Series’ found
itself the focal point in an international censorship episode.
Reasserting
her deep commitment to principles of freedom in aesthetic (and
political) expression, Nancy Worthington states:
“My view
is that art can challenge the mind:
art can inspire the senses; art can uplift the spirit; and
art is, in fact, a record and reflection of civilization(s).
All art is a unique visualization coming from a specific
mind and heart. I feel a sense of duty to make social observations.
My art is something that I must do in order to live in
harmony with the world as I perceive it.”
